For many, the holiday season is a time of cozy jammies, hot chocolate, and family traditions. And while binge watching hours of cheesy holiday movies is one way to spend the holiday downtime, it should be done with some caution. Entertainment’s goal is just that, to entertain – be it through violent images, bathroom humor, or steamy romantic scenes. Consumed media has the potential to influence young people’s expectations around dating andrelationships, and some holiday themed movies may seem harmless at first glance, but many are riddled with dangerous and harmful stereotypes, and antiquated gender norms. While we don’t want to ruin anyone’s good time, wethought this could be a really great opportunity to foster conversations around media literacy and being a critical consumer by introducing Prevention’s “Holiday Movie Bingo”! Select a holiday movie to watch with your family (maybe from acertain channel that rhymes with “schmallmark”), and during the screening use our Holiday Movie Bingo Card to keep an eye out for outdated movie tropes. Once the movie is over, discuss what messages you found hidden throughout the film and how that might influence expectations around dating.
